About Us

In the seventies, new restaurants were coming up everywhere, and Jim Russo, owner of Hawaii Equipment, a Foodservice Corporation, was busy designing, building and equipping commercial kitchens around Hawaii. At about the same time, the tide of gourmet cooking at home was beginning to rise….

In December of 1981, he opened Executive Chef, a retail store at the Ward Warehouse in the heart of Honolulu. Bringing a "restaurant supply" to a pedestrian mall, it was filled with "leftovers" from Hawaii Equipment in 1400 square feet of space. By 1985, the store had expanded to twice the size, with an ever broadening array of kitchen tools.

In 1989, he opened Bath & Butler, a store designed to carry the best in products for the bath as well as personal care items, right next door to Executive Chef. In 1994 "the wall came down" between the two stores to share the foot traffic. The "new" 5000 sq. foot store has since evolved with the growth of the tabletop category and downsizing of the bath and personal care category.

Now home to 15,000+ sku's for the kitchen, tabletop, and bath from over 600 suppliers, Executive Chef strives to offer the widest array of quality merchandise to its customers in Hawaii and visitors from abroad. It is a challenging task, given the logistics of shipping to Hawaii, but has earned a "favorite store" reputation among shoppers for its breadth of selection. With a total staff of 27 employees, and six or more sales associates on the sales floor at a time, customers can be assured of finding help at every moment at every corner.

Note: The launch of this website has been a "long time coming", and we are looking to primarily use this as a vehicle to communicate with our customers in lieu of a newsletter.
